Then: Home of the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1963
In late 2017, Robyn Madson, DO, Dean of the University of the Incarnate Word’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), was asked to consider a way for UIWSOM to participate in the year-long 300th anniversary celebration of the city of San Antonio. Dr. Madson considered what a privilege it is for the osteopathic school to be situated on this historic campus. She couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this historic year than to host a reunion to honor the people who once worked on the campus and the amazing contributions they made to our country, the state of Texas and the city of San Antonio.
In early March, the Host Planning Committee — comprised of former employees of the School of Aerospace Medicine, current UIWSOM faculty who were also once employed or trained by the School of Aerospace Medicine, UIWSOM leaders and partners from Brooks Community — was formed, and planning was in full swing for the development of a spectacular event!
The reunion will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13. The dual event will kick off with a VIP Welcome Back Breakfast on Saturday morning in honor of those who served at Brooks, as well as the leadership of the School of Aerospace Medicine.
The breakfast will be followed by a community celebration on Saturday that will be open to the public and feature information and representation from groups originally located at Brooks as part of the School of Aerospace Medicine; guided tours of the KBWiley Labs and the School of Osteopathic Medicine facilities, hosted by Wiley’s leadership and current UIWSOM medical students; showings of episodes from the documentary film The Story of Brooks (introduced by the film’s creator and Brooks historian) and the 1927 movie Wings; and more!
Now: Home of the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, which welcomed its first class of students in 2017
We are very excited about this special event and hope that many will join us in celebration of San Antonio’s 300th anniversary and in honor of the School of Aerospace Medicine, the Brooks Community and The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.
