ACell, Inc. is a leading regenerative medicine company focused on the development, manufacturing and commercialization of tissue repair products based on its proprietary urinary bladder matrix (UBM) technology platform. ACell offers a broad range of surgical solutions, in addition to its complex wound management products.
When not responsive to the standard of care, surgical soft tissue repair and complex wounds can lead to a variety of adverse outcomes, including scarring and infection. The primary advantages of ACell’s products are that they maintain their natural collagen structure and are gradually resorbed as the patients’ body replaces the product with site-appropriate tissue.
ACell’s MatriStem devices are often used to manage surgical soft tissue repairs or complex wounds where the standard of care and other regenerative therapy treatments have not been effective.
One example of MatriStem success is the case of an 86-year-old patient who had a cancerous tumor removed from his nose. Once the skin cancer was removed, the physician opted to surgically repair the exposed cartilage and apply MatriStem wound products. Cartilage has a limited blood supply, and healing over exposed cartilage can be extremely difficult. Typical options include skin grafting or prosthetics, which have associated risks.
Following seven applications of MatriStem wound products over the exposed cartilage during a period of eight weeks, the patient’s nose tissue was successfully remodeled with site-appropriate full-thickness tissue, dramatically improving the patient’s appearance and quality of life.
“Our proprietary technology has had significant success with challenging cases, demonstrating significant benefits for patients as well as economic benefits for hospitals and surgeons,” says Jim DeFrancesco, CEO of ACell.
MatriStem: Not Your Ordinary ECM
ACell’s MatriStem product line is the only commercially available extracellular matrix (ECM) made using UBM technology. MatriStem devices contain multiple types of carbohydrates, collagens, proteins and other components, and are gradually resorbed by the patient’s body following administration. MatriStem devices maintain an intact epithelial basement membrane, which is hypothesized to facilitate the body’s natural healing potential and facilitate site-specific tissue remodeling where scarring would be expected.
MatriStem products are intended for a wide range of applications, including:
- Partial- and full-thickness wounds
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Chronic vascular ulcers
- Tunneled/undermined wounds
- Donor sites/grafts
- Post-Mohs surgery
- Post-laser surgery
- Podiatric surgery
- Wound dehiscence
- Second-degree burns
- Skin tears
- Tissue repair
- Body wall repair
- Esophageal repair
- Vaginal prolapse repair
- Pelvic floor reconstruction
- Pubourethral support
